At the EPO, the European Patent Office, the elections of the new president take currently place. The candidates left are from the national patent offices of France, Switzerland, and Sweden.
Not alone that they have a big problem in that the national patent offices provide the president of the European Patent Office - which is not particularly good for keeping a centralized, and thus strong EPO. It appears to be even more problematic that they have a non-EU candidate from Switzerland there. Would a non-EU president support the EU patent? Rather not. And is it not time for a president from another country than Switzerland, France, Germany, or The Netherlands, who provided presidents and vice-presidents there for decades now? France provided the presidency already three years ago, and Switzerland, as a non-EU country, had already a president for 10 years in the 32-year history of the EPO, plus a vice-president is still in charge there already since 10 years. Not to forget that the Swiss candidate was already head of the council of the EPO for more than 10 years. Too much influence from Switzerland? I think yes. |
