Google Trends: Public Awareness of "Patent" is on the Decline.
An experiment with Google Trends: The number of queries targeting the English and/or German word "patent" is slightly on the decline over the past three years. Maybe that is because of the broad stream of a public debate on so-called "software patents" has converted into a trickle, at least for now.
But, can please tell me someone why the corresponding French word "brevet" shows such distinct peaks at quasi-regular intervals?
I've got a very interesting hint from a French reader:
"The response is may be that the word 'brevet' also appears in the term 'brevets des collèges' that is an examination that the majority of French pupils present when they are about 14. The result of the Examination (in June) is available on the Net. This is may-be the response to your question. Can you check?"
I think this sounds very much plausible. After all it seems that the astonishing phenomenon is not in any way related with patents.
When trying Google Trends with "brevet des collèges" versus "brevet" it appears that there is a strong correlation. Maybe most of the pupils are lazy and refrain from typing the full expression so that the single word peak for "brevet" is much higher:
